Specifically for architectural design, AutoCAD® Architecture software is an architectural drafting tool to help you design and document more efficiently.

Create architectural drawings, documentation, and schedules more quickly and easily. Built for architects, AutoCAD® Architecture has design and documentation features that help automate tedious drafting tasks, reduce errors, and increase efficiency.

Design

Architectural renovation Building renovation tools can help speed the design and production of renovation projects. The tools enable you to graphically represent design changes to existing buildings as existing, new, or demolished, and coordinate renovation drawing views.
Preview architectural object styles With Style Preview, you can visually confirm walls, doors, windows, and other architectural object styles in the Properties Palette before use.
Walls, doors, and windows Create documents and architectural drawings using walls, doors, and windows that mimic real-world behavior and construction. Modify walls and their endcap conditions on a component level for improved handling of common wall conditions, such as angled, cornered, or intersecting fire-rated walls. Insert and place doors or windows into your architectural drawings with more precise control. When you move any wall, all connected walls and spaces automatically update.
Integrated rendering Bring architectural designs to life for impressive client presentations at any stage. Streamlined visualization capabilities are fully integrated into the AutoCAD Architecture workflow. Accelerate architectural design review cycles by publishing directly to DWF™ or DWFx file formats.
Real-time Fillet/Chamfer changes Command Preview enables you to see Fillet and Chamfer changes in real time, as you make them, even before the command is complete.

Collaboration

TrustedDWG™ technology Help ensure the fidelity of your AutoCAD drawings when sharing and saving design data.
Project Navigator CheckOut CheckOut lets you make changes outside of the project structure to avoid frequent, unnecessary xref change notifications. CheckOut also helps prevent team members from reacting to incomplete temporary changes or tests. No one else can view your changes until you check the file back into the project structure.
Project Navigator CheckIn When you CheckIn a drawing, it saves automatically and notifies team members of the updated version. Add comments to a new file upon CheckIn to help ensure team members clearly understand your changes. Multiple backup versions are automatically saved, so you can also quickly return to a previous state of a drawing.
Industry Foundation Class (IFC) support AutoCAD Architecture provides Industry Foundation Class (IFC) file format support, including recertification from buildingSMART for importing and exporting version 2x3 IFC files. Toolkit enhancements make it easier to migrate changes from one release to another.
PDF support Share and reuse designs easily with PDF support.

Documentation

Sections and elevations Create and update 2D sections within AutoCAD Architecture through dialog box reduction. To create a section, draw a section line. AutoCAD Architecture will generate a 2D section, based on the objects that are automatically included within the boundary of the section line. For even greater control, add and exclude additional objects as well.
Color-coded version differentiation Visual Compare highlights graphic changes and geometry differences between two versions of a drawing. And, changes are color coded to make them easier to see.
Automated property set definitions Automatically attach property set definitions to architectural objects to complete quantity takeoff calculations more easily. You can attach existing property set definitions to newly created objects and their styles, and easily attach new or modified property set definitions to existing objects.
Wall dimensioning With AEC Dimensions, you can dimension any wall and all of its components according to your own standards. Dimensioning includes wall stud centerlines and faces. Associative dimensions automatically update as your designs change, eliminating time-consuming manual updates.
Space tagging and documentation Automatically tag every room in your architectural drawing, complete with room areas. Change the bounding elements and spaces update automatically, saving you time and helping to make documentation more accurate. Space definitions can include offsets from bounding elements based on preset rules or rules you define, enabling area calculations that reflect a variety of industry standards, including BOMA, DIN, and SIS.
Room documentation Use the Roombook feature to apply multiple finishes to a surface. Roombook calculates walls, floors, and ceilings, as well as room circumference and furnishing elements, for better room documentation. Easily create a detail schedule for each surface and export the data to an Excel spreadsheet, or export a DWF™ file to Quantity Takeoff cost estimating software.
Architectural drawing creation and annotation Document and annotate architectural drawings faster with an extensive library of detail components and powerful keynoting tools. Automate the creation of architectural details and maintain consistent annotation. Generate keynote legends when your details are complete.
Annotation and unit scaling Change drawing units and object tags, text, and other annotation scaled objects to keep the same relative appearance and size.

Customization

Easier style access The Styles Browser palette lets you browse styles for many objects from a variety of sources and libraries. Dynamically search and select preferred styles. Import preferred styles and assign the selected style to the object in the drawing.
Streamlined user interface A sleek user interface offers enhanced desktop organization, a large drawing window, and easy access to tools and commands. Find your favorite tools faster, locate less frequently used tools more efficiently, and discover new features more easily. The user interface design is consistent across many Autodesk products.
Customized scheduling Easily customize the look of out-of-box schedule styles to meet your company's standards. You can also create new schedules from scratch, complete with your required calculations. Schedules link directly to your designs and can update instantly to reflect design changes. Group, format, and subtotal similar data at different levels, and export grouped and subtotaled schedules to Excel.
Easy changes to block instances As your design changes, you can make changes to your components more easily. Assign block instances a different definition without recreating the block.
Display order by layer Set order for layers in a list, and apply the display order for objects on each layer. Preview changes to make sure they're predictable.

Excellent tool for architects

My recommendation when using AutoCad if it is starting, is that they get an online course where they explain the most useful tools well because this application has many tools with basic applications that others can solve better.

The Autocad program has given me many benefits since before I had to draw by hand and I did not have the precision in drawings that I needed, until I started using it and I can mount any document assemble the drawing from the application and export it.

Pros

I love using the Autocad program because it is indispensable at the moment that I need to project any piece, project or drawing that I have created, this program gives me the speed of drawing in an easy and simple way with high precision that helps me deliver presentations Of a high quality, when I started using it, I did not need to have much knowledge of its tools because its interface is very simple to understand as well as being nice because each tool when locating the courses on it, shows you the description and what it is for. In addition to the Autodesk page gives you the student or teacher license completely free for three years which is excellent. Its file export system is very broad.

Cons

The program is certainly an excellent option if you need to design in 2d but if your need is to design in 3D the application becomes very heavy, in addition to having to have a good capacity computer for the program to run fast, in addition to It starts to fail if the file is very heavy and tends to give fatal error.

The ideal tool to make architectural plans

I recommend using AutoCAD whenever you need to design your architectural projects taking the precaution of saving from time to time to avoid losing your files, because the program when you have little computer capacity has to throw Fatal error in your files and damages it.

Undoubtedly, AutoCAD has brought me many benefits because the time it takes to design a design by hand does not compare to the short time when I do it in AutoCAD, in addition it is a program that has been related to many platforms so I can Import files of all kinds.

Pros

The AutoCAD program is indispensable for me when working, because when I finish making paper sketches of my project, I immediately move on to translate it and project it on this platform which saves me a lot, its presentation level is very high, since I need that each design has a perfect aesthetic because when I present the plans it is important that everything has a perfect finish. The Autocad program is very simple to learn, it also offers me many tools to easily draw any design that I propose and to take it to 3D, in addition to making architectural plans I can use it for many things that I propose, I love how it helps me to maintain The order of my documents and their storage system is excellent.

Cons

The main disadvantage of AutoCAD is that its license is very expensive, although on the Autodesk page it has a free option for students which is very good, to know how to fully use the program it takes a lot of study time because it is very extensive and It has many tools that are of little application to be very specific, you need a computer with a good hard disk capacity because the program tends to get slow when the file is very heavy

Foundation for Architecture

AutoCAD is one of the biggest foundations to the way we work in architecture today. It is equivalent to hand drawings plans, sections, elevations but more efficient as it can be saved and submitted online, edited, changed etc. To work in the field, CAD is a must know, even if the office uses other programs (mostly 3D these days) CAD is still one of the underlining foundations within those programs as well. It's essentially knowing how to draw.

I highly recommend AutoCAD Architecture to others considering it. It has progressed over the years in great ways, extremely user friendly, easy to open across multiple users. In our office, we are able to integrate the MEP work straight into our drawings.

Pros

It is the simplest foundation found in all programs. If you use 3D programs (like Revit or Rhino) the basis for the 3D always goes back to the 2D CAD style. AutoCAD is a must know for the field.

Cons

The best thing about it is its simplicity, but it can also be its dislike. It's difficult to make changes because you need to change it in every drawing. Unlike 3D programs which changes it all simultaneously. But again, its the foundation to know CAD, plus good discipline with needing to mark up every change in every view.
